It isn’t hard at all to notice that Israel is a constant report in the news, even if you don’t watch the news, you still hear tid bits of information that leak through. I stopped watching broadcast news on a daily basis, and that is probably due to the fact that I spend a lot of time on the internet where the news is prevalent. What is it about the news that brings us to attention? The major search engines/web browsers have made throwing news a part of our everyday lives. News sells well, but it isn’t just any kind of news that gets us to attention. It is the negative news, or the downcast reports that catch us most – right? We will glue our eyes and ears to any news that throws a shadow, an ill report, or just plain knock out drag out, dog eat dog on someone or something. We want to know who is down and out, who lost what, and how bad it must be for anyone; the more famous that person is, the more followers that news will generate; but you don’t have to be famous to be big news either. If you pay attention to the next previously unknown person who is so unfortunate to be brought out to the national lime light, notice how their story really isn’t any different than one you can read in a local small town paper on a weekly basis.
So what is it that drives our thirst for this kind of news? Why are we so drawn to someone else’s troubles? Could it be that we feel better about ourselves when we see what we think is someone else having a worse day than we are having? I think that might be the hammer hitting the nail on the head.
No doubt this world we live in is full of our mistakes, pain, troubles, and unfortunate circumstances …but why is that and does it have to be that way?
I mentioned Israel in the beginning of this page, and that is because that country, its people are in the news daily. We hear all the constant fighting between Israel and their surrounding countries. Some people will say that the struggles for the Israelites, and for their land, isn’t due to God’s judgment but it is just that people don’t get along and that their “religions” are the root of the problem.
To be continued.
Think about this for a moment, and tell me your thoughts. If you had the opportunity would you read or watch only good news, or would you feel uninformed without the bad news?
God Bless.
